What is a ping? And, why ping?
Pinging is like shouting out “I just updated myself. Come crawl me.”. The “shouts” that you send out to the Ping Servers is called “ping”. Thus, the name “pinging”.
BMD automatically add profile pages of user accounts to the Ping queue whenever there are new bookmarking submissions. You can run a PING right after each bookmark submission.
Pinging helps in getting your pages indexed.
Note: Some sites have dynamic profile pages so BMD is not able to add them into the ping queue automatically. You can add those URLs into the ping queue yourself. Use “Add URLs to Queue” to do so.
Also, you can retrieve the dynamic profile URL by logging into the site using the account, and editing the account details to specify the profile URL. Refer to my previous post on “How Do I Edit My Account Details”. The next time you bookmark using this account, the profile URL will be automatically be added into the ping queue. Frankly, I didn’t bother with it as it require too much work from me.
Where to find Ping Servers?
As BMD does not come with a default list of ping servers, you got to first add your own list into BMD before you can ping your URLs.
Simply Google for “ping servers” and you’ll get a comprehensive list of ping servers.
How many ping servers to add?
I have a list of around 30 ping servers to ping my URLs. I do not know the optimal number of ping servers but I thought 30 should be pretty fine.
How to add Ping Servers?
Go to the “Ping Servers” section in BMD5 and choose “Add Ping Servers” to paste the list of ping servers that you found.
Adding of ping servers is simple. That’s it.
How often do I ping my URLs?
It is good to have a delay between each ping. Why? Anything that is random does not have a pattern for detection. This is to make your ping look natural.
If you have a lot of URLs to ping, you can make use of a proxy server to mask your IP from the ping servers.
We’ll talk about “Create Accounts in BMD5” in my next lesson.
