Once upon a time, I promised to release a tool that will harvest scuttle sites for use in BMD. I did not fulfill it. I am truly sorry.

Today, I have a gift for all of you.

A Very Simple Site Searcher

Though the title says that it is meant to scrap for Scuttle / ScuttlePlus / Pligg and PHPDug sites, but it is not restricted to just that. It is basically a really simple scraper that search for registration and login pages from the search results returned by search engine.

How Do You Use The Tool?

This tool is kept as simple as can be. If you want to search for Pligg sites:

  • You just need to enter the footprint for Pligg sites into the text field.
  • Click on the [Play] button.

To delete search results:

  • Select the rows and hit the [Del] key on your keyboard.

IMPORTANT! Deleted results will be lost and you have to harvest again.

What Happens When You Close The Tool?

  • It will automatically save all your search terms as bookmarks in the file “very-simple-site-searcher-bookmarks.txt”
  • It will automatically save all your search results in the file “very-simple-site-searcher-results.txt”

Tip: You can backup the above files by renaming them, or copying them to an external storage.

What Do I Do After Scraping?

The scraped list will automatically be copied to your clipboard at the end of harvesting. Simply open BMD, click on the “Add Scuttle/Pligg/PHPDug” button from the tool bar (as shown) and paste it in:

Did I Mention It’s Free  For All?

Just hit the download link to download the tool. You can also distribute it freely. HOWEVER! You shall not charge or use it to exchange for anything. Cos it’s FREE.

FREE DOWNLOAD

System Requirements

You will need .NET 2.0 in order to use this tool.

Today, I will cover the last part of Preferences configurations. That is to talk about how to configure your connection, miscellaneous setup and also how to configure BMD to use Visual Aid.

Connection Settings

In this screen, you can either choose:

  • I do not want to use any proxy server
This option simply means that I will be using my real IP for submission.
  • I want to use the same proxy setting as Internet Explorer
This option will instruct BMD to use the proxy server settings stored within their Internet Explorer.
  • Let me define my own proxy server
This is the place which you list down the proxy servers that BMD will randomly pick for it’s submission tasks.

Using proxy servers is a good way to camouflage your account creations and bookmark submissions.

Why? Because bookmarking sites generally check the IP (not limited to) of the connections established. If the same IP is creating tons of accounts in a short time in the same day, OR if the same IP is submitting huge amount of bookmarks using the same/different accounts in the same day, bookmarking site owners will ban and remove these accounts and bookmarks.

How does it help? Proxy servers help to mask your actual IP address from bookmarking sites.

When do I need to use proxy servers?

  • If you spam, you will need to use proxy
  • If you create a lot of accounts on the same bookmarking site on the same day
  • If you submit a lot of bookmarks to the same bookmarking site on the same day

If you fit any of the above criterias, you will need to use proxy servers. You can fill up the list of proxy servers in the following formats:

  • ipaddress:port (Public proxy servers)
  • username:password@ipaddress:port (Private proxy servers)
  • “email@address.com”:password@ipaddress:port (Private proxy servers that uses email address to login)

Personally I prefer private proxy servers over public proxy servers. Public proxy servers as mentioned on @EdwinSoft, are like taking public buses while private proxy servers are like taking a cab ride home. The latter is faster, but both can be caught in traffic jams.

You can refer to my previous post TIPS: The Safer Way to Create Accounts Using BookmarkingDemon on some proxy server usage tips.

There is also an option that allows you to instruct BMD to continue or stop if all your specified proxy servers are dead during the submission process.

What does it mean by “Continue without proxy server”? When none of the proxy servers in BMD is tested to be working, this option will instruct BMD to use your real IP for submission.

Remember to perform a proxy health check before you proceed to confirm the connection setup.

BMD will test all listed proxy servers. If it passes the health check, BMD will keep them in the list for future submissions. If it failed, they will be removed.

Tip: For those who use public proxy servers, I advise you to perform the proxy health check BEFORE any submissions. This will clean up your list and speed up the submission process.

Miscellaneous Settings

Here’s a list of Miscellaneous setup.

Transparent effect

One of the pretty useless option in BMD. What this option does is allow you to adjust the transparency of BMD using the mouse wheel (by scroll up and down of the mouse wheel). I advice you to keep it off.

Audio Alert

This is generally used for Captcha input. Especially useful for people who does NOT make use of Visual Aid and needs a reminder when a Captcha input is required. Remember to turn the volume up on your PC speakers so that you won’t miss the door bell.

Create Shortcut

This simply tell BMD to create a shortcut on your Desktop.

If you move around and don’t have a fix PC that you use BMD (Yes, BMD is portable!) on, you can turn this option off so that it does not create a shortcut on each of the PC that you use.

Minimize to Systray

With this option on, BMD will minimize to the system tray when you hit the Minimize button.

Tip: If you are using Windows 7, turn it off so that you get to enjoy the cool new task bar that comes with it.

Disguising BMD as a Browser

Purpose: This is basically to fool bookmarking sites to think that you are using Mozilla Firefox browser (I chose Mozilla in the screenshot) to bookmark which in actual fact, I am using BMD to bookmark.

Keep Those Sites Off My List!

Deleted sites that are part of BMD’s list are automatically restored into the current project every time you start the software. This is irritating especially when you have cleaned up those default sites and BMD is still adding them back in.

What do you mean? For example, I am currently working on Project Pancake. And, I deleted a1-webmarks.com from my “Social Bookmarking Sites” section. I then proceed to restart BMD. What do I see? Holy, a1-webmarks.com is automatically restored back into Project Pancake! BUT NO! I don’t want it inside my project!

To stop this from happening, turn this option on.

Okay, Delete Those Accounts For Me

Purpose: To automatically delete user accounts and bookmarks that have unsuccessful login returned from bookmark submission.

This is especially useful when you wish to get BMD to automatically cleanup your banned or orphaned (accounts that you have created and have not used them) accounts. By the way, read that note in the above screen shot. It’s useful.

Visual Aid Settings

Many times I have seen in forums posted by uninformed people who has no clue that BMD now support full automation. So what is this Visual Aid thing? It’s basically a fancy name given to auto-Captcha breakers. BMD supports the following provider:

  • http://decaptcher.com ($4 per 1000 images)
  • http://bypasscaptcha.com ($7 per 1000 images)

How Do I Enable It? Via Set Priority Tab.

To enable visual aid, you will need to change the priority setting from “Disabled” to “1st Priority” or “2nd Priority”.

Having 2 visual aid providers is a good thing. Decaptcher.com has a good reputation in failing when it is not supposed to. With Bypasscaptcha as backup, you can ensure a smoother automation ride.

Giving Up

There will be times when no matter how many times the visual aid provider have returned the answer to the Captcha, the bookmarking sites will still refuse to accept them (for god knows what reason), you will want BMD to stop the submission. You can use this option. I prefer to set it at 2.

To Visual Aid Providers: You Can Keep My Credits

Facts:

  • Real human beings are behind those Visual Aid providers that answers the Captcha.
  • Human beings make mistakes.

Disable this option when bookmarking site rejected a Captcha answer from the providers so that they will not deduct the credit from your account. However, it has the tendency to get your visual aid accounts banned.

Why will Visual Aid provider ban my account for reclaiming bad images? In the case that this option is turned OFF, and Visual Aid provider happens to repeatedly enter the “wrong” Captcha input, BMD will attempt to reclaim your credit from them. These providers don’t like too many reclamation (due to fraud) made, Visual Aid provider will think that you are trying to cheat them and they will ban your account.

Decaptcher.com

There are two modes of Decaptcher.com that you can use. They are HTTP POST API and DLL (provided by Decaptcher.com).

To use the Decaptcher.com in HTTP POST API mode, simply fill up the login credentials in BMD.

To use the Decaptcher.com in DLL mode, you will need to download the DLL from Decaptcher.com and extract the DLL into the folder that you installed BMD in. Restart BMD to start using the Decaptcher DLL mode.

Hit “Check Balance” to check your credits balance of Decaptcher.com.

Bypasscaptcha.com

To use Bypasscaptcha.com in BMD, simply fill up your User Key.

Hit “Check Balance” to check your credits balance of Bypasscaptcha.

Finally, we are done with setting up of Preferences in BMD.

In my next post, I will put up a summary on Preferences in BMD. Expect some useful tips on how to make use of the Preferences settings to avoid being spammy and also increase the percentage of success rate in bookmarking.

In the first lesson, I’ve walked through the Performance settings of BMD’s Preferences. Today, I’ll show you how to make use of the Randomization settings in BookmarkingDemon 5 to make your bookmark submissions look natural to bookmarking sites.

BMD5 Preferences Randomization Tab

Basically the randomization screen is made up of various settings for bookmarks, the content to be bookmarked with, and also the RSS Camouflage.

As usual, I will break up the screen into parts for easy illustrations.

Randomization Settings for Web Pages

Turn this option “I want to randomly pick my web pages for bookmark submission, and the following is how I want it to be randomized” on to tell BookmarkingDemon how you want your web pages to be selected into the bookmark submission queue.

The 3 options could look intimidating so I will give a little explanation on what each of them really means.

For each web page, it will have X to Y % chance to be selected for bookmark submission.

What happens over here is that for each web page, with the above setting of 25% to 25%, it will have 25% chance of getting picked for addition into the submission queue. So if I have 3 web pages under “My Web Pages”, all of them selected for queue selection, each of the web pages will have a 25% chance of getting picked into the queue.

Important
: Using this randomization setting might end up with zero web pages added into the queue as each web pages are re-rolled for the queue.

P.S.
I believe this is one of the very common reason why people in forums are complaining that no web pages are added into the queue when they hit the “Add My Web Pages to Queue” button.

I want to randomly pick between X to Y % of my web pages for bookmark submission.

I will illustrate with an example.

    • I have 100 web pages stored under “My Web Pages”
    • All of them are selected
    • I have the above setting set to 50 to 75% chance

With the above, what happens is that BookmarkingDemon will randomly pick between 50 to 75 web pages and add them into the queue for each bookmarking site.

I want to randomly pick between X to Y of my web pages for bookmark submission.

Very similar to the above setting, I will also illustrate with an example for clarity sake.

    • I have 100 web pages stored under “My Web Pages”
    • All of them are selected
    • I have the above setting set to 3 to 5

Now BMD5 will be randomly picking only 3 to 5 web pages and add them into the queue for each bookmarking site.

There is no hard and fast rule on which work best but it certainly make things look very random when you choose a small number as your setting.

Depending on needs and preferences, personally, I prefer to use the third option at 1 to 3 web pages. Coupled with the Spammometer + RSS Camouflage for my submissions.

For this option, I’ll illustrate with an example.

“A 10-min Chocolate Pancake Recipe, A Quick Whip-up Chocolaty Pancake”

If you have this option turned on, BookmarkingDemon will break up the above into 2 titles, and randomly picks one (E.g. “A Quick Whip-up Choclaty Pancake”) for submission.

Purpose: This allows you to key in a few titles that will be randomly picked by BookmarkingDemon to submit to a list of selected sites. With more comma-separated titles specified will mean each bookmark submitted will probably contain different titles. This will make your bookmark submissions look random and natural.

Turning this option on will instruct BookmarkingDemon to pick the specified percentage of tags for each web page to be submitted.

For example:

  • I have a list of tags “cheese cake, cake, ice cream cake”
  • I have the option set to 50 – 75% tags to be picked for bookmark

When BookmarkingDemon generate the submission queue, it will randomly pick between 2 to 3 tags from the above (E.g. “cheese cake, cake”) for submission.

Tip: From my personal experience, avoid having too many tags. 3 to 4 tags provide the highest success rate during submission. There are too many sites out there that simply don’t like a bookmark with too many tags in it. Especially Pligg sites.

This will instruct BookmarkingDemon to shuffle your bookmarks X number of times before they are sent to the submitter for bookmark submission. This is the same as you shuffle a deck of cards before starting a card game. For the ultra paranoid, you can set it to 3.

RSS Camouflage

Like the chameleon that changes colors to camouflage itself for survival in the wild, we need to camouflage our bookmarks too.

This is the place where you can enable RSS Camouflage feature in BookmarkingDemon. It allows you to specify a list of RSS feeds which will be mixed into your bookmarking queue when you hit the “Add My Web Pages to Queue”.

The steps are:

  1. Tick “I want to enable RSS camouflage and pick between 1 to 3 RSS feed for each web page submitted for bookmarking.”
  2. Enter a list of RSS feeds that you have. It can be from anywhere. Blogs or NEWS sites and etc.

Later on, when you hit “Add Web Pages To Queue” at the “Bookmarking” section to generate your bookmarking queue, these RSS feeds will first be read into BMD, then randomly picked and mixed into your list of bookmarks.

There is a note “With RSS camouflage disabled, all crawled RSS feeds will be treated like normal web pages.”.

Purpose: If you have this RSS Camouflage option turned off, and used the RSS Crawler at the “My Web Pages” section to crawl and add your RSS feeds into the list of webpages, BookmarkingDemon will treat the list of webpages as normal web pages.

Alright. I am done with setting up the Randomization Preferences.

We’ll wrap up Lesson 1 in my next post on setting up Preferences. Stay tuned to Lesson #1 Part 3: Setting Up Connection, Miscellaneous and Visual Aid Preferences

BookmarkingDemon5 Lesson #1: Setting Up Preferences

Today’s lesson is focused on setting up the Preferences in BookmarkingDemon5. Yes, the preferences is a place that can easily be overlooked. Personally, I think it is the heart of the software and it is very important if you want to make the most out of the tool.

Preferences, It’s Huge…

Preferences is a huge topic and I’ve decided to split Lesson #1 into 3 parts, namely:

  • Lesson #1 Part 1: Setting Up Performance Preferences
  • Lesson #1 Part 2: Setting Up Randomization Preferences
  • Lesson #1 Part 3: Setting Up Connection, Miscellaneous and Visual Aid Preferences

This way there won’t be an information overload and it’s a lot easier to digest.

The Preferences screen will default to the Performance tab. This tab is the place where you setup the performance of your submission tasks. I’ll breakup this screen into smaller parts to explain further below.

The above setting is also what is commonly known as threads. It tell BMD that I want to submit 40 bookmarks concurrently.

Purpose: Our computers are of different technical specifications, this allows people with slower computers to configure the number of bookmarks to submit.

Personally I find a setting of 20 has the best user experience. You don’t get that freezing and resuming a few seconds later frequently.

This is where you can emulate a human submission by instructing BookmarkingDemon5 to wait for 10 to 15 seconds between each submission to bookmarking site.

Purpose: We are humans. It is not possible for us to submit 50 bookmarks within seconds. Bookmarking sites that implement speed detectors will easily find out that the submissions are performed by bots and not real people.

With this setting, it makes thing look natural.

This tells BookmarkingDemon5 to wait for 120 seconds before giving up a submission task to each site. It is also commonly known as timeout.

Purpose: This is especially useful if the site is full of content and takes a long time to load (usually due to load). Also, if you are using a proxy that is overloaded, the page takes longer than usual to load.

This option allows us to tell BookmarkingDemon5 to wait a while longer before giving up.

I would prefer a setting of 180 seconds as from experience, sites like Indianpad.com tend to take longer time for a page to load.

This is pretty straight-forward. It says people with frequent connection problem, turn this on. For me, I have it turned on as default.

This is the limit setting to tell BookmarkingDemon5 what’s the maximum number of bookmarks to submit for each bookmarking run.

Purpose: This is for people with lower computer specifications to adjust the number of bookmarks to submit accordingly.

Tip: People with lower computer specifications can submit a lower number of bookmarks in each bookmarking run, and split your bookmarking runs into small batches.

This tells BookmarkingDemon5 how many bookmarks to generate each time you hit “Add My Web Pages To Queue”.

Purpose: This is also for people with lower computer specifications to bookmark more efficiently after adjustment.

Tip: People with lower computer specifications can generate a smaller number of bookmarks in the bookmarking queue and bookmark in small batches.

The option “auto-start bookmark after queue is generate” basically tells BookmarkingDemon5 to start bookmarking after you hit “Add My Web Pages To Queue” without requiring you to hit the “Start” button.

This is especially useful if you have a lot of items to generate for the queue and you do not want to wait for it to finish before you can start the submission.

With this, you just let it generate the queue and you can use your time on more productive stuff.

This is to tell BookmarkingDemon5 to pick the first available category from the bookmarking site. Click on the “?” icon and it says:

Some bookmarking sites require you to enter a category for your bookmark. Check this if you do not want to specify any category and accuracy of category is not important to you.

WARNING: Enabling this might get your accounts banned.

Purpose: Well. This is to give convenience to lazy people who don’t want to specify the proper category to bookmark to. Notice it says “not recommended”? I will not recommend this too.

A pancake recipe bookmark might end up in “pets” category. It look spammy. Site owners don’t like it and it look irrelevant when search engine crawls it.

It is like having a chicken in a duck farm. You know what I mean?

First, let me tell you what Anti-Bot is. You can click on the “?” icon to get the answer though. It says

Anti-bot prevents the same account from submitting multiple bookmarks to the same bookmarking site at the same time.

WARNING: Disabling this might get your accounts banned.

The Anti-bot will be activated during bookmarking if BookmarkingDemon5 finds that you are submitting more than 1 bookmark using the same account on the same bookmarking site. BookmarkingDemon5 will intelligently throttle to only submit 1 bookmark a time.

Purpose: Basically, there is no way for the same person to be submitting more than 1 bookmark at the same time.

If you do that, you will easily raise a red flag to the bookmarking sites and get your accounts banned.

This option takes effect when you are generating your bookmarking queue.

The option “1 bookmark per account (Prevent triggering of Anti-Bot)” is to prevent submitting more than 1 bookmark using the same account on the same bookmarking site. Enabling this option, and click on “Add My Web Pages To Queue” will generate only one bookmark per account.

Purpose: This effectively prevents more than 1 bookmark to be generated in the bookmarking queue for the same account on the same bookmarking site. This way, it also prevents your accounts being banned as your bookmarking will sure look more natural to the bookmarking sites.

Enabling the option “1 bookmark per site (Minimize the chance of accounts banning due to submission from same IP address)”, and click on “Add My Web Pages To Queue” will generate only one bookmark per site.

Purpose: This option is especially useful for people bookmarking without proxy servers. This way bookmarking sites will not see that you are bookmarking 100 URLs using the same IP address and ban your accounts.

However, this is only true if you spread out your submissions. So remember to spread out your bookmarks like how you would spread the butter on your bread. :)

Enabling this option tells BookmarkingDemon5 to interrupt a bookmark submission in the bookmarking queue that has captcha during bookmarking. BMD5 will skip the bookmark and proceed to the next bookmark.

Purpose: This is especially useful for users with self-added sites that requires CAPTCHA during bookmarking, and they do not use Visual Aid.

Let me give you a scenario to illustrate the usage:

There is a user, Mousie, with a lot of bookmarks added into the queue. He doesn’t want to use Visual Aid and he doesn’t want to enter the captchas.

So what does he do? Mousie decides to turn on this option “If a site is detected to require CAPTCHA input during submission, I want to skip to the next task” under Preferences and start his bookmark submission.

This is what happens when the submitter kicks off:

  • BookmarkingDemon5 will detect that there are sites that require CAPTCHA during bookmarking.
  • BookmarkingDemon5 also detects that Mousie has no Visual Aid turned on.
  • BUT! Because Mousie turned on the option above, BookmarkingDemon5 will now skip this bookmark and proceed to bookmark the next item in the queue.

Mousie does not have to sit in front of his computer and wait for captcha input! He can proceed to work on more important things! Boy I can imagine how happy he would be. Ha.

“I want to retry X times before giving up a scheduled task.” option instructs BookmarkingDemon5 to try X times before giving up on a scheduled task.

Purpose: This is especially useful if the schedule is bookmarking to a site that is full of content and takes a long time to load. Also, if you are using a proxy that is overloaded, the page takes longer than usual to load. This option allows us to tell BookmarkingDemon5 to try again before giving up.

The option “I will wait for X minutes before retrying.” is the amount of waiting time before each retry performed by the Scheduler.

Purpose: It don’t make sense for the Scheduler to retry bookmarking to the same site immediately especially if the site is overloaded. So, this option helps.

You do not want ping server to ban your URL from future submission. So it is good to have a delay between each ping time.

My preference is to set the waiting time between each ping to wait between 1 to 1 minute.

Alright, it’s been a long post and let’s end this lesson here. I hope it has been useful to you.

Stay tuned for the next lesson, Lesson #1 Part 2: Setting up Randomization Preferences.
